In March 2020, in response to the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic, NCLEX® Examination testing centers temporarily shut down. NCSBN worked with Pearson VUE to modify the testing experience to support the essential flow of new nurses into the healthcare system by minimizing the risks associated with testing to NCLEX candidates and Pearson VUE test center staff members. As Pearson VUE modified its testing channels to provide higher sanitization levels and meet the needs of social distancing, NCSBN released modified versions of the NCLEX-RN® and the NCLEX-PN® Examinations to provide a shorter licensure examination that maintained the psychometric quality of the pre-COVID NCLEX® Examination.
The first Modified NCLEX® Examination was administered on March 25th, 2020. The modifications were based on extensive simulation studies using actual NCLEX® Examination results. NCSBN described the details of these modifications including
