Blog 007: Educational Program Code Basics and The Importance of Using Them Correctly to Maintain Data Integrity

Prior to the production of the NCLEX® Program Reports, nursing students enter educational program codes into their application for licensure. The codes that they enter directly impact the results provided in a program’s NCLEX® Program Reports. Therefore, it is important to ensure that these codes are entered accurately, and inaccuracies are identified and rectified. This article will explain the fundamentals of educational program codes and describe the actions that educators can take to minimize program code inaccuracies, detect them when they occur, and correct them as quickly as possible. By taking these actions, educators will optimize the accuracy of the information contained within their NCLEX® Program Reports.

An educational program code is an identifier for a nursing education program in the same way that a Social Security Number is an identifier for an individual. A ten-digit educational program code is created by the new program’s local nursing regulatory body (NRB) when the program opens based on rules established by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®). NCSBN maintains the master list of educational program codes and updates the list of education program codes quarterly.
