This course is a part of the Special Topics Series. As the name of the series implies, each course pertains to a specific topic aligned with the mission of the Mountain Measurement Professional Development Courses and relevant to nursing education.

Prerequisites and Target Audience

There are no prerequisites to attend this course. This course is targeted for nurse educators that review or create tables, charts, graphs, and infographics. The course is appropriate for educators new to data visualization as well as those with many years of expertise.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to expose nurse educators to the power of data visualization and to cultivate the knowledge and skills necessary to review and create useful, efficient, and beautiful data visualizations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities where data visualization can enhance the usability of information
  • Describe the common types of data visualizations
  • Describe the major theories of data visualization
  • Describe the major attributes of a data visualization
  • Evaluate the quality of a data visualization
  • Design effective data visualizations
  • Select an appropriate technology to construct data visualizations

Most importantly, participants will be motivated to create high quality data visualizations and improve the data visualizations that they encounter.

Format

Course 550 is delivered as a 3-hour synchronous, web-based experience which includes a mix of lecture, individual and small group activities, and a 30-minute Question and Answer session. Participants are expected to independently complete a 30-minute end-of-course assessment immediately after the course concludes.

Continuing Education

3.5 contact hours are awarded through the Alabama Board of Nursing (Provider Number ABNP1516 Expires 2/4/2025) to all individuals completing the course and the end-of-course assessment.
